Projects

Hard to Zero

Project objective

  • Decarbonise the hard-to-abate industry sectors to significantly reduce industrial CO2 emissions in the Basque Country.
  • Maintain competitiveness in the industrial centres of the Basque Country and hard-to-abate sectors. Early decarbonisation is a key to the competitiveness of these sectors and requires the availability of renewable hydrogen, CO2 capture and use of oxygen, all in optimal market conditions.

Strategy

The strategy to combine decarbonisation with keeping competitive in this type of sector relies on: combinar la descarbonización con el mantenimiento de la competitividad en este tipo de sectores pasa por:

  • The ability to produce renewable or low-carbon hydrogen on a large scale, to be cost-competitive.
  • Deliver limited transport infrastructure that connects supply to demand
  • Make use of synergies that require using oxygen and CO2 to optimise processes or generate new products.

Lines of action

Production and use of renewable oxygen and hydrogen

CO2 capture

Use of recycled water

Design of infrastructure for distributing renewable gases and CO2 that interconnects generation with use and potential storage

Use of CO2 captured in the production of e-fuels and e-methanol

Design of infrastructure that allows for the export of renewable gases

The role of the EIC Foundation is to provide management support to this strategic decarbonisation initiative through outlining the management and support needed for a framework project that covers the various activities.
